August 2006A cool morning as the Big Dragons congregate at the church door - helmets atop, tyres checked, cameras clicking as our intrepid crew prepare for the sponsored challenge. Setting off (Click image for larger view 153KB) A ‘biathlon’ to raise funds towards setting up St. George’s ‘Little Dragons’ seemed to be a good idea a few days ago. Apparently, a biathlon involves cross-country skiing with intervals for shooting. However, the Pontesbury version consists of a cycle ride through the lanes followed by a brisk walk, covering a total of around 10 miles. ‘Far enough!’ you hear us cry as we set off with a fiery determination worthy of several dragons, sheltered somewhat by our 2 x 4 -wheeled, light-flashing, support vehicles fore and aft. Our brave cycling party consists of a wide age range 68, 65, 62, 59, 47, 39 and almost 3, totalling 281 years, with an additional 133 years joining us for the walk; the only essential entry qualification being a foolhardy disposition and a big smile. Completing the first half (Click image for larger view 306KB) Both disciplines being achieved without mishap, despite meeting a horse, several vehicles and two barking dogs, all participants stayed the course and roared to a standstill at the Station Road pit-stop where huge amounts of typical dragon food were devoured. Finished and ready for Dragon Grub! (Click image for larger view 754KB) Big Dragons and the participating Little Dragon wish to thank all those who have sponsored them with such generosity. Your support has enabled us to purchase some wonderful and exciting equipment. We await with anticipation the Grand Opening of our Little Dragon group on 12th September at 10.00 a.m. PS. If anyone missed our pleading glances as we stood shyly with our sponsor sheets in hand, it's never too late to make a contribution!!! Val Butterworth |
