The Choir of St. George’s Church, PontesburyThe main purpose of a choir is to assist the clergy during the service, through its leadership of hymns, psalms, choral responses, anthems, prayer and spoken responses. The earliest Christians continued the Jewish traditions of singing or chanting the psalms, and this tradition has evolved to accommodate the wide liturgical styles and repertoire of the modern choir. Choristers share a common interest, and enjoy the shared thrill, when they do well. We often prepare items well out of season, such as turning out on a cold January night to practice 'Stainer's Crucifixion', so that it will be ready for Good Friday. In addition to singing in the usual Services and Special Services (Christmas, Easter, Pentecost); the Choir plays a full part in Taizé Worship, this last being mainly led by choir members, and we also entertain at church and village functions. Recently, members have been involved in many of the Wedding Services and Funerals held in church. Since September last, the choir has been resplendent in new Twickenham Red cassocks with cream scapulars. Everyone looks remarkably dignified well almost!
Choir Practice is held in The West End Room on Fridays between 7:45 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. As always Jack Cornall, our Choirmaster, and all choir members have an ear open for anyone who may wish to join our ranks. New members are always welcome. For anyone who enjoys worship through singing it is an ideal opportunity to harmonise this with spirituality. (Some of us have tape measures at the ready with which to entwine aspiring choristers!!!). If you are not sure, come and sit in with us anyway.
