West End RoomThe proposal that St George’s establish the West End Room within the body of the church arose out of the need to find a more suitable meeting place for church and other local associated activities. Since the early 20th century St George’s had used the adjacent Deanery Hall for such gatherings; however, the ownership of this building had been taken away in the 1970’s when all Glebe holdings, of land and buildings, were removed from parish responsibility. So, since the 1970’s St George’s paid rent for the Deanery Hall, as well as being responsible for its insurance. By the turn of the 20th-21st century it was considered by the PCC that the Deanery Hall no longer met the needs of the Church and accordingly an alternative solution was sought. The Screen built to form 'The West End Room' Other churches were visited and it became clear that the west end of the naïve was ideally suited for conversion into a meeting place. The project started in 2001, with many fundraising events. Two rows of pews were removed, which were sold by auction, the font returned to the body of the church and sponsorship sought for the windows. All of the work was undertaken by local tradesman and the room formally opened in 2003.
